Removing lower cowl

I?m trying to lower the bottom cowl on a 1998 75 force so I can get at the exhaust plate.

So far I have removed 2 nuts on the two lower side shock mounts under the cowl each side and two bolts from the front shock mount. The cowl is still rock solid. The complete description in the manual I have is ?Remove the lower engine cowl covering?. Not much help! As this step is done before removing the power head I?m hoping I don?t have to actually remove the power head.

I'm hoping it is something simple. I've spent ages looking at it but can not work out what to do next.

What am I missing?

Re: Removing lower cowl

May have answered my own question on this one.

After talking to a local mechanic it looks like the power head needs to be remover to get at the exhaust plate. The cowl doesn't drop down.

Anyone had any experience with these motors?

Does this sound correct?

They might be talking about the midleg cover.

Re: Removing lower cowl

Thanks for the reply Jason32038,

Middle leg on these are all one piece with spacer plate then the power head sitting on top. Looks like when you lift the spacer plate/ power head off the exhaust tube comes with it. The earlier models look to have a two piece middle leg but this one is a one piece arrangement.

I was hoping someone here had already worked one this type of motor and would know how to tackle it. I?m leaving it in the too hard basket at the moment.

The local marine mechanic said he could sort it out. It?s not urgent so I?ll leave to next winter (6 months away here in Australia). I would still like to do it myself but I need more information to know how to go about it.

Thanks again for your input.
