So I am at a loss... Trying to remove the lower unit, the part that houses the gears in my 1960 Scott 40hp outboard. The repair manual is clear that there's 3 nuts holding the lower unit bolts, but I looked and looked everywhere and I found only 2... The location of the third is just not there. I removed the two I could see and then tried to separate it... But seems to be stuck at the front and only separates about 1/16" in the rear. Should I just got it harder to separate or is there a bolt under the shift lever? I can't remove it to see. Needless to say, I am frustrated.... Any ideas? If I hit it harder will I break anything?

Find the third fastener.-----Leave the hammer on your work bench.

Do you have a parts diagram? Sometimes that helps to locate certain parts locations.

Yes, i have a parts diagram, and i have the repair manual- and that's where things go awry- the diagram shows the third nut in front of the bevel gear, yet on my unit, there is no such nut... i don't know if you can see in the photos but it's just not there. I cannot remove the shift mechanism easily and i have the other two nuts (part #1) removed so in theory it should be easy to seperate...but it seems to be bound up at the front. Could it just be stuck? Any other thoughts? 2021-07-09 09.jpgIMG_20210707_201837898.jpgIMG_20210707_201841917.jpg

My manual is showing 2 types of feet used and neither are even close to your picture.
