1966 Merc 950 I just bought a new prop but I have no clue how to get the nut to break loose do I go left for loosening it? and how do I get the prop to not move when I am using wrench on it? any answers would be great thanks.. Also do I need to tighten the prop nut to a certain torque?

lefty loose, Use a 2x4 or some other piece of wood to jam the prop agenst the lower unit. Im not shure on the torque on your engine, someone elese will chime in.

Re: Removing my Old Prop?

First you have bent up the three small metal tabs on the outer washer that keep the nut from coming lose.

The block the prop with a piece of wood between the prop and the AV plate to pick it from turning.

Losen by turn counter clock wise(left). Tighten by turning right; again need to block the prop to tighten to 55-60 lb ft of torque. Bend three of the little tabs down into the slots on the washer to keep the nut from working loose.

Better yet; if you google "outboard prop removal", you can watch videos on how it's done. They say a picture(or video) is worth a thousand words. :)

2x4 between the prop blade and anti-vent plate is the procedure outlined in the manual and what I use. On the Merc, obviously the locking tabs have to be bent out of the way to get it off and the nut must be aligned with the detent in the locking plate when reinstalling. Then tang down 3 of the 6 tabs. Nut torque is 55 ft-lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench, 55 is not knuckle busting tight, but tight. You don't want the prop flopping around. Between the self locking nut and the SS locking ring, the prop isn't going to come off till you remove it.
