I changed registration from one state to another, and have to remove the old registration numbers from my painted aluminum boat. Any quick and easy ideas on what works to remove the old decals?

I would think the common suggestion would be a
heat gun. Don't quote me since I'm new to
boating, but that's what I use to remove those
gaudy dealer decals from the backs of cars.

You can use a heat gun or hair dryer, PW2, but use only enough heat to soften the plastic so you can peel them off.

Too much heat will hurt the paint.

Good luck. :)

Go to an autobody supply store and buy a decal eraser, its about the diameter of a soup can and 1/2 inch thick. You will have to get the arbor so you can attach it to your drill, will not scratch the surface works like a dream.

Hair dryer, peel, clean residue with WD40, then soap and water. Works like a charm every time. Heat gun is too hot.

PW2,

Pick up some 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner # 08984. Any auto body supply place will have it. This product removes the residue.

A hair dryer really makes the sticker portion much easier to remove. The trick is to get it warm, not hot.

Ditto on the hair dryer (or heat gun VERY carefully used) to get the decal itself off. For the glue residue, bonafide adhesive remover works for sure. But there are several common products you might have on hand that will also work: mineral spirits, rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid, etc. Most adhesive removers are made from those things or a combination. Only warning is use a little in an unobtrusive place to make sure it doesn't harm the underlying finish. Also, you might see a "ghost" after you remove the decal - the exposed finish might be a little duller, or shinier, or maybe less faded, than the old. Most of this stuff can be rectified with a little polish. Good luck.

goo gone and 3M rubbing compound works good. The rubbing compound will remove junk off your boat after the letters are removed.
