Hi,
I have posted several times about replacing the transom on my 75 Wriedt spoiler.
I am replacing from the inside of the boat, it is not a sandwiched transom.
I have sucsessfully removed all the old wood. now I have encountered a problem. how do I chip or should I chip out all the old epoxy that glued the transom wood to the fiberglass skin of the boat? The entire transom was literally wet mulch, so it just seperated from the epoxy. some of the epoxy is chipping off, some of it is holding firm. what is the best way to get this stuff off? I was thinking of using a Dremel with a diamond wheel on it, cutting it into strips and then prying it off. good idea?

also I am using marine plywood on the transom. this stuff is expensinve(117/sheet) can I get away with using regular plywood for the stringers and epoxying 3 layers together, then coating the outside with epoxy?

thanks
Josh

Use whatever power sander will fit into the space. A belt or disc sander will work best if you can get in there. Careful with the disc sander that you don't gouge the glass. Whatever you use mechanical abrasion is the only way. You need to get all of the old wood and loose glass off and make an even but roughed up surface.

Ayuh,.............

My 1st Attack would be with My 4" Grinder with a Disc........You don't want Diamond,....Use a Carborundum disc.......
Grind it back to "Good" epoxy,...... If it's Still Stuck,.... Leave It.......

I can't see Wasting the money on Marine Plywood.........
Your Encasing it in Epoxy,...???.........

My Favorite Plywood is Dry P/T plywood..........
CDX will work if it's Flat,+ Straight.......

yeah, i'd grind it as said.. don't worry to much if you gouge it some.. actually ,, gouge ain't bad.. it gives more surface bonding power..

never use thin epoxy other than encapsulating/sealing.. use epoxy fillers to thin to a peanutbutter consistentcy..

i'd take back the marine ply.. 117 bucs is stupid..

go with ABX doug-fir ply.. almost as good an tons cheaper..

home centers don't carry it.. but any lumber yard can order it in 3 days..
