Whats the best way to remove old gaskets? Just scrape it off or is there some sort of solvent to use?

They make 'gasket scrapers' for just that purpose. It's like a screwdriver except it has a wide, sharp paddle at the end. They are not that expensive, do a good job and keeps you from gouging up the gasket sealing surface. Buy one and don't use it for anything else. That will keep from dinging up the blade.

An old wide wood chisel can also work well BUT dont sharpen the tool to a razor edge because you will 'carve your mark' into any soft (aluminum) surfaces.
3M also make a gasket scraper/cleaner that you use with a air powered die grinder or Dremel type tool.
I can't remember the part # but it is green in color about 3" in diam and made of plastic. looks like a hair brush with bristles about 1/2" long.
It screws into a special holder but it works very well on soft surfaces without ripping them up.
Some one else on the forum will probably have the # available.
I have used them for many years for engine rebuilding
Mine is not near me at present.

Good luck
Peter
