Stuck on cr*p!!!
Hey all,
What is the best way to get off the old baked on gasket material from the stat housing and spacer and head on my EV 90 without gouging up the surfaces? Is there some sort of chemical that works good?
Also, as an experiment, I soaked my old stats in CLR (calcium and lime remover)After quite a bit of bubbling and foaming as the crust melted off, they look pretty new and uncrusty and unstuck. If I boil them in a pot of water and they open at 145 deg. Why wouldn't they be reusable? I'm not that cheap, but I'm just throwing this out there. They are $17 apiece, and having a couple of spares around wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: removing old stuck on stat gasket

17 buxs is alot cheaper then a new outboard. your local auto store will have a spray can of gasket remover it works great on aluminum. as for your question are the thermostats reusable yaa they probably are but i would not do it, but thats me i like having peice of mind when i am out on the water knowing things are new. but i have to hand it to you i never thought about the CLR trick might be a good idea to run my little outboard in a bucket of that before i put it away for the winter. hummmmmmm now you have me thinking
