Trying to pull my whole unit and the only thing holding it in right now is the steering cable. The is the one with two cables in a red casing and a drum at each end.

I have managed to get the cable off the drum and the front. Is it simply cutting the ends and pulling the whole set up out? Or am I missing something.

I'm getting $500 for the drive and motor in exchange on an outboard, so I I do ruin it in the process, that's okay. Just would like to give the guy a decent cable if possible.

The cable with drums on each end are one piece. If you take the cable off of the drum chances are it'll never go back together. I don't understand where you are having problems. Remove the drum from the steering shaft in front and remove the gear shaft on the outside of the intermediate housing. There is a set screw, accessed through a slot on one side of the drum at each end.

ditto.. the cable stays together as an assembly. You simple slide the whole grey alum housing part off the intermediate housing's steering shaft. There's a couple bolts holding the bracket on. Same thing at the steering shaft on the helm end.

Hmmm. There's no way I would get the cable out of the boat then. If both ends still have the drums, I won't be able to pull it through from where the cable run is.

It was obviuosly installed prior to the sides of my boat being put on.

I doubt it matters to the guy buying so I'll snip the ends.

But thanks. I see now that I need to do different then the manual.
