I need to replace wiper seals in my tilt trim unit and cannot budge the pin connecting the tilt ram and swivel bracket. Would like to avoid the blue wrench (torch) if possible. Any advice. 2000 j130vxsss.

You could try soaking with PB Blaster. Next, a BFH and a BRASS drift. Next, the blue wrench.

Likely the blue wrench. Blue wrench being oxy/acetylene, not mapp gas or propane.
Heat liberally all around the pin, maybe 1 inch away from the actual pin. Liberally. It helps to use a rosebud tip too. Then the BFH, first on one side til it moves a bit, then quickly go to the other side...back and forth. It will come on out.

Don't mushroom the pin.

Don't have oxy/acetylene. I understand the quick heat that it can apply to the perimeter. I do have map but it cannot pinpoint the heat like a good welding tip so I might be up the creek on this one. I am being weary of mushrooming so the sprig clips fit when this is done.

Anyone ever given thought to releasing the tilt packing spanner nut then lowering the unit off with the tilt ram left on the boat. Take the nut off the bottom of ram and removing piston so packing and orings can be done. Rebiuld rest of unit and reinstall onto boat sliding tilt ram into its cylinder...

If you use a brass drift you won't mushroom anything. But go ahead and try your idea and let us know how it works.

I understand your advice Boobie, will be trying the brass drift first. I have needed one for some time anyway. Working on stuff is how I justify buying new tools......

Re: Removing pin from swivel bracket and trim/tilt assembly

So far, epic fail on getting either pin removed from the tilt\trim unit. I had a 3/8 brass rod and a hefty dead blow hammer and was not able to get any movement. I will purchase a large probably 3/4 brass drift, thinking I may not be transferring enough energy with what I have. Applied heat with mapp/oxygen but discontinued because the swivel tube started to get pretty warm and I do not want to melt seal in there. Anyone ever tried a universal joint remover on these things (the big c clamp type). Thinking maybe driving with an impact wrench I could transfer some force with quick impacts.

They also make brass attachments for the impact hammer. Try it and use more heat.

Success. The universal joint press was the ticket. The screw is too big to drive it all the way through so worked it side to side with liberal pb blaster and finished off with the brass drift. Cannot do this on the lower pin, and would not want to stress the transom brackets like that anyway. Current plan is to jack the motor high enough and tilt out the trim assembly. Hopefully the tilt ram will clear for removal. The only issue with it currently is the wiper seal is shot. Will save the rest of the rebuild kit for when I need it and am more ambitious to remove lower pin. unless I cannot remove the ram this way. Thanks for advice as always.

The U Joint press was a good idea. Glad you got it.

AAAArgh. Got the tilt ram out today. Please don't tell me the factory did this..... The ends off the threads at the bottom of the ram have been hammered with a punch to lock the nut. I spent two hours fine filing and chasing threads to get the nut back on and torqued. Used the blue threadlocker locker permatex as a thread locker. This project won't give up.
