I am trying to remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump. The existing one is plastic and there was a service bulletin that changed it to metal. The new pulley is larger and comes with a larger Serpentine belt. There is a 3/8" hex key slot in the shaft, but it does not seem like it wants to budge. How is it suppose to come off?

OK, checked the service manual. Looks like it is pressed on. It looks like there is a special tool to remove and another to install. Not sure what the tool grabs though. The picture shows the older V-belt pulley, not the S-belt. Could someone confirm it is the same tools?

Does anyone know what the actual problem that the service bulletin is suppose to fix? Shreading belts? Cracked pulleys?

Note: OK, checked a latter service manual (31) that does show the right pulley. I still need special tools. :( I hate special tools for a one time job! I will have to call around to see if I can borrow one.

Hello John.If you have an autozone or Oreilys auto parts store near you, they will rent you the puller/installer.You just have to leave a deposit, use it,and when you bring it back, you get your full deposit back, unless you are missing peices. The hex bolt does not come out,the pulley itself is the only thing that come off.Hope this helps you

Hey John,I just got to work, and heres a picture of what my puller/Installer looks like.I picked this up at an discount tool store for under $20.00. If we lived close to eachother,I would just loan you my tool,or come over and do it for you.If you have any questions when using this, please send me an message, and I will be happy to explain it to you on how to use it.

Merc said the plastic pulley would crack, I had one that came in that half the pulley fell off.
Without those special tools, you WILL damage the pump.

Don,

Thanks, that is what I assumed, given the belt has held up fine. While there are no visable cracks, will replace with the metal one.

Odie,

Thanks. I will be checking with Autozone. I have used some tools in the past including Harmonic Balance Puller. If they don't have one, I will be driving past a Harbor Frieght this coming weekend.

PS: My local Autozone has a puller/installer. :)

I picked up the tool after work and pulley was easily removed and the new one pressed on. Thanks for the tool pointer.
