anyone ever do this? how hard is it, what is involved? if its hard, is it possible to buy a smaller size serpintine belt and bypass the compressor. seems to me the belt would still pass over where the compressor pulley is now.

unless you have the a/c recharge machine, youre SOL. Those little refill kits from walmart dont do nearly what they claim. If you dont care about a.c however, you should be able to tear the pump out and either use a shorter serp belt or you can sometimes get a bypass pully that mounts in place of the ac pump

Changing compressors isnt a walk in the park but if you are mechanically inclined its not that bad . the important thing to remember is unless you have a vacuum pump you will still have to take it to a pro and get them to vacuum the system and charge it after you swap out the compressor ( quickly after ) .

Something isnt right here.

If your AC isnt working the pulley will still turn. Why do you need to bypass the pulley?

If the bearing/clutch of the compressor is bad, they can be replaced without dumping the freon, but you will need a puller.

So why are you wanting to replace the compressor or bypass the pulley?

You should be able to rent a puller from Autozone when you purchase the new pulley/bearing.
