I'm trying to remove rod bolt cap screws on a 1986 140 lopper for a rebuild. Put the socket on the first bolt, it broke off! Any tricks to this as the others are real tight as well.

Where are they breaking? Just under the head or at the surface of the rod base? No way would I try heating them. The rods and caps are heat treated for their application and heating them to get bolts out could cause future rod failure.

the bolt broke just below the socket so part fo the bolt head is still going to prevent the cap from being removed

its time for a drill or a dremel. dont hurt the rod. they are rather expensive. now see why I say always use new rodbolts on reassembly.
good luck and keep posting
ps once you get the last part of the head drilled off it should twist out by hand:)

Once you get the rod cap off the remaining bolt studs should be fairly easy to screw out.
