93 140HP with a dead trim motor. So I've managed to remove the top pin on the tilt assembly after banging on it for three days; had to grind off the tilt adjusting rod because that was rusted in place, just so I could remove a couple of transom mounting bolts that were themselves in the way of two of the trim assembly bolts. Successfully removed all the trim assembly bolts and have tilted the assembly forward enough to access the three trim motor mounting screws, which are of course practically welded to the assembly with rust.

Any suggestions on how to remove those screws? I tried a propane torch but I was afraid I'd mess something up internally in the trim assembly with the heat. Is it possible to drill the screws out, or is that asking for trouble?

So far I haven't been able to depress the tilt cylinder enough to completely remove the trim assembly. Will it compress all the way?

Re: Removing rusted trim motor from Evinrude 140

Update: I finally pulled the entire trim assembly from the motor and used an impact driver to remove the screws holding the rusty trim motor on. Bought a new trim motor (Arco6220), reassembled everything according to the manual, added the proper amount of Dexron fluid and bled the air out of the system by cycling the unit and adding fluid as needed. Voila! It worked! I go to bed a happy boater.

However, and it seems like there's always a "however", the next morning I'm looking at the outboard and notice the trim unit is soaked with hydraulic fluid. I can see it seeping from where the trim motor is mounted to the trim assembly. My first thought is I didn't adequately clean out the dried out rubber from the old O-ring, maybe causing a gap that fluid is getting past. So I scrape and clean, and notice some rough spots where the metal has either worn a bit, or been corroded. Still it doesn't look that bad. I reassembled the unit and still fluid is leaking.

I'm wondering why there isn't another gasket in addition to the thin O-ring, but the manual doesn't show anything. Would it be possible to use permatex to make a gasket? Or am I resigned to finding another complete trim assembly, which are pretty pricey from what I've seen.

I use it as its never let me down on anything ive used it on. Its cheap and it holds pressure in and out very well and more importantly to me its not a silicon type product. Ive used it in similar applications to what you say there where the housing around and o ring isnt quite perfect

Try some 3M-847 sealer.
