Anyone have any tips for removing the screw in the lever on top of the shift shaft? I need to remove the shift shaft to get the bellows install tool in. If I need to drill this out is the top lever ($27) destroyed in the process? Worst case I hope to save the shaft which is $50.

I am soaking it in WD40 tonight. Tomorrow I may hit with an impact wrench. It looks like it is brass so that may not be a good idea.

doubtful you can remove just the screw.I usually get one in the kit so i drill a 3/16 hole thru the arm to the shaft and split it off, then remove the screw.

So the threads are in the arm and are up to the shaft? You drill into the screw, split off the threads and then push what is left out from the back side?

thanks

not into the screw, along side it .then with a small chisel split the arm.Ignore the red arrow. You can see the screw ,go to the left of it.

Thanks, I will hit it with an impact wrench tonight. When that fails I will sacrifice the arm.

that'll destroy the slotted head of the screw

try heat - if that doesn't work, break the arm with a chisel and replace the arm, the screw too for that matter

What dubs says, heat around the screw, not on it :)

No luck with the heat. I was gentle because I did not want to damage the seal. Drilled the hole and it split right off with a few bumps from the air chisel. If I had been more careful I even could have re-used the screw. I was worried about damaging the shaft but it is steel. The drill just stops when it hits the steel and there is no risk of damage. Thanks to all for the advice.
