Removing starboard side fishwell pump on 2352.

I need to remove and replace the starboard side fishwell pump on the 2001 2352 which I just got today. It is only accessible from the little port just under the transom door and only by feel. Has anybody removed one of these? What is the best procedure? It seems like one needs to disconnect it from the well. Can this be done from inside the well? Help is very much appreciated.

Re: Removing starboard side fishwell pump on 2352.

My 96 2352 may be different than your 2001

My Bilge pump is in the back, under the motor. Forward of the motor I have a sump containing a bilge pump. Supposedly, the baitwell and fish boxes drain into this sump and the bilge pump, pumps the water overboard. It's never worked for me, so I removed it. I've rigged to thru hull bilge pumps on each fish box. My baitwell drains overboard.

On my 96 2352, the baitwell raw water pump is under the captain's seat. I access mine by crawling down the (port side) cave (under the passenger seat) and removing two screws to a thin plywood door. From the port side, I can look under the captain's seat and work on the bait well plumbing and bait well pump.

In the same area is the forward bilge pump. I decided to leave the plywood door off because I want to have access to the thru hull valve in case of emergency.

Forward of the bait well pump is a second thru hull which provides raw water to the head. You may have this depending on whether you have a raw water head and holding tank.

Generally speaking, the 96 needed all of the float switches, bait and bilge pumps replaced. Check your PVC thru hulls for sun or freeze damage.

Thanks Craig for your reply.

There is a different setup on my boat. There is a a pump right at the back of the fishbox that pumps the contents overboard rather than into the bilge where the aft bilge pump sits. Access to the pump is difficult through the hatch provided however and I want to know if anybody has removed one before and if there is an easy way to do it.

Regards
Randy.

So, after a bit of messing around I was able to remove the pump. For anybody else needing to fix these pumps in the future, the big black nut on the inside of the fishwell is essentially one half of a thru-hull and will release pump. One nice surprise is that the Johnson pump has replaceable motors that just click out of the housing. WestMarine sells the replacement for $30 as opposed to the $70 Trophy charges for the whole assembly.

That is the best set up. Some people put a small bilge pump in the bottom of the fish box. It takes up room, but is easily serviceable.
There are screw on screens that you can use on your threaded pump. These screens are sold to be used on transom thru-hull bait pumps. The best one has a black plastic base and a stainless mess screen.
