I didn't get any action in the General Boating section on this question: How do I remove the steering wheeling on my 1984 Sea Ray SRV210. I want to gain better access to an electrical panel behind it. The center of the wheel has the head of a bolt that passes all the way through the instrument panel and steering mechanism. The bolt is secured with a nut and cotter pin on the back side of the steering mechanism.

Post up a couple of good pictures...clear, close ups would help to see what you have...if you can't physically get to the back side, point your camera up there with the flash and take some shots till you get a clear shot or two...

We'll figure it out for ya...

Here you go. This is the back side behind instrument panel. If this is going to open a can of worms, I'll just leave well enough alone. I am unable to find any documentation relating to this steering mechanism and I haven't before fooled with anything like it. I am an average to below average driveway mechanic.

That looks just like mine on the checkmate,

Remove cotter pin and nut and its a thru bolt from the front.

All's you can do is try it.....

Good luck!

Hmmm, doesn't look like that is the way to do it...

The front of the wheel should have a center hub cover that snaps off or is held on with screws or a snap ring...when that comes off, there should be a nut in the center...when that comes off...you can usually wiggle the wheel off by applying a back and forth pressure to the rim, while at the same time pulling on it...it could take a bit of force to do this but it should come off the shaft...

If that doesn't work for you, you can buy, borrow, or rent at your local auto parts store a steering wheel puller...it is fairly self-explanatory on how to use it...

Just beware that when the wheel finally comes off, there will be what is called a woodruff key...it may stay in place, or it may fall off, or it may come off with the wheel...look for and save it, it is what goes in the machined groove that is on the shaft and the wheel and keeps them mated...

Hope this helps...

The center of the wheel has a plastic hub cover secured with a set screw. Take that plastic hub out and the head of a bolt is visible in the very center of the wheel. Turn that bolt and the bolt in the picture turns. It appears to me that the bolt runs all the way through the steering wheel, instrument panel, and steering mechanism.

Pics of the front of the wheel would help too!

If that's the case then, remove the cotter pin, spin the nut off and pull the bolt.
