Removing the Flywheel...

1989 90hp VRO Crossflow Evinrude. Question is this, is there a way to get a hold of a flywheel tool to rent or buy? Or is there a way to make something that will allow me to remove the flywheel since the manual says I need something to remove off the shaft. Now, I do wonder if maybe it just unscrews off. Can anyone help me with this?

Mr. Fisher thank you so much. What would I ask for in terms of the proper name for this tool?

KD Tools makes a piece called a flywheel turner. Most NAPA stores can get it for you, if they don't stock ... it's < $30. The easiest way to loosen is to use am impact tool, then you can hold the flywheel with you hand. Especially make tightening really easy. No tool to hold flywheel needed!

For pulling the flywheel, you need a harmonic balancer puller, also an auto parts store item < $20.

jmorrell588,

Wildone is correct Autozone will loan a HARMONIC BALANCE PULLER. You will have to go to Home Depot (or other ) and buy three 1/4 inch #20 3inch long bolts to use on the flywheel. It may not pop right off but it will come. I have had one take two day to come off. What you want to do is load the flywheel bolt up with 3in1 or WD40 wait a few hours and retighten the puller, more 3in1 tighten again ect... if worst comes to worst rap the balance puller main bolt a few times retighten start all over again it WILL come off.

Good luck----

Mr. Fisher and Mr. One, thank you for your help. One last question (I think), it says "remove the flywheel nut with the appropiate size socket." Would you two or any other people know what size socket (Close guess will work) I will need to purchase? I do not have one that big. This will save me from having to purchase a a socket kit since I never come across one this size.

Measure across the flats. It's bigger than 1". Typically those that large are only available 3/4" drive, so you will also need a 1/2 to 3/4 sq drive adapter. An impact wrench (electric or pneumatic) will eliminate the need for the flywheel holder and make this a simple job. Use the impact wrench to loosen, but don't remove the flywheel nut. Then get the puller in place. Use the impact tool on it also. Voila ... the flywheel is free. By the way don't use oil and make certain the flywheel bore and the crankshaft taper are free of oil or anything else before reassembly. To reassemble, just use the impact tool at its max torque setting. I suspect the torque is ~ 105 ft. lbs for your motor.

Re: Removing the Flywheel...

according to the specs the torque on tbe flywheel in 85 pounds I would suggest to invest in a GOOD torque wrench I picked up one at Autozone (Again) for $29.00.

Re: Removing the Flywheel...

Mr. Fisher and Mr. One, thank you so much for the research that you have done. I did go to the store (Auto Zone) and got the Crow foot puller and do have it attached. They did not have the torgue wench in stock so I will have to try another store tomorrow. Price I paid for the HARMONIC BALANCE PULLER was 14 bucks and well worth the small investment. I now see why it would take so long to get that flywheel off thinking I could do it with just muscles alone. I will try another store and see if they will have it in stock. Calling in advance this time. Thank you both for you Help and knowledge.
