I have to swap my current 1969 Johnson V4 115HP electro shift powerhead into another leg assembly of exactly the same model. I am unsure how to remove the powerhead.

The powerhead is currently supported by an engine hoist.
Have removed the 2 bolts and 2 double threaded inerts located mext the steering arm assembly.
I have removed the 6 bolts which go vertically up into the powerhead (Still does not come loose)

QUESTIONS:
1. How many other bolts/nuts are there.
2. When I remove the powerhead does the bottom bottom part of the casing come off with it.

Once I have removed the powerheads I should be ready to go. Is removal of powerhead documented in the standard manual ?

Pleeeeassse....
Can anyone send me an image of page in the manuel which shows the exploded schematic :)

Cheers

Removal of the powerhead is covered in all of the manuals I have seen. I would recommend that you get the OMC manual specific for your motor.

The 2 studs in the back of the PW is what gave me a problem, We had to hit a pry bar between the thermostat housing and the PW to pull it loose, I Pulled a stud right out of the block,..(had it welded and retapped) these studs are in tapered holes and years of muck gets pounded down the hole, once I got the PW off I was left with the stud still sticking out of the exhaust housing..still couldn't get it out. had to drill it out. Good luck.
What would I have done if I knew this before hand ..?

I would have tried to get a pair of vise grips on the stud under the cowling and tried to spin it loose, Knowing i would strip it but it is very simple to replace. Or add a little heat to the stud, get it to expand and loosen the muck.

This is what was left after my removal. look at the holes, this may help 4 nuts(2 studs front 2 back) 8 bolts ( 6 long 2 short )

Thank you all.

All your points where completely correct as we found the two bolts in the back completely rusted. One of which I had to split the nut to get it off. When removing the powerhead we used a bar to wedge between the casing and the leg housing as not to damage the seal area around the exhaust mount area. The two studs in the back had binded to the housing which was the only real reason to use the bar to pry it off.

Was an excellent feeling when the top finally popped off.

I have found by miracle two other complete engines of the same type really cheap so I have stuck one of the new motors (ceased head, good leg and LU) on the back and I have to pull the powerhead off that one and put my good powerhead into it.... Quite a bit of changing around but at least I will get fast at it.

I also had the help of a fellow boat club member today who has done this before and with your added advice it made for an easy task.

Thanks for the photo hotrod 007

Cheers All

Another update...

Hi all,

Just thought I would post the last bit to this whole episode I went through. I only just finished finalising the motor today.

Things I had to do:
1. Remove another powerhead off the good leg.
2. Put the good powerhead onto the good leg.

Things I had porblems with:

1. The two studs at the back of the engine block - very corroded. Had to use a tool to tap the nuts around off the bottom of the studs in there respective alcoves. Eventually had to hoist the powerhead up enough so they would crack off, then drill them out. (Came off with a bang)

2. When putting the engine back in, if you have taken the bottom tray off and unbolted the seal skirt from it, I heavily recommend you put it in its correct place before mounting the engine. The same goes for the upper water thermostate unless you want to fiddle things ( I admit it was easier to see the seal fit on the back of the motor when the powerhead was off...

Apart from that things fitted together nicely.

Started the motor up and it all ran nicely like a well oiled machine.
