Removing top plate on a bravo question

I bought a bravo I drive a few weeks back, and I want to double check it before I out it on my boat. I would like to remove the top plate and inspect the gears. Is there anything I need to watch out for when I take the plate off... Like little parts that will fly everywhere? Any other advice would be helpful and appreciated.

No, nothings going to jump out at you, but you also aren't going to see much of the gears. Unlike your Alpha, there is an upper gear, and without removing the input shaft and pinion gear, you just aren't going to see the gears.
Here's the manual for the 95 Bravo drives. http://www.4shared.com/document/UZ_e6ZT8/Service_Manual_11.html Section 3A should help you see what I mean.

That's is great info Don, and thanks. Other than checking for water on the oil and shavings, is there anything else I should look for?

Re: Removing top plate on a bravo question

Not really anything to look for, but if you remove the drive, make sure you run the engine and shift gears to make sure the cable went into the latch correctly. Don't try to shift the bravo without running the engine, or having someone turning the prop, or you can damage the shift cable or the latch.
Another trick, if your engine dies and it won't come out of gear, bypass the neutral safety switch and crank the engine at the same time as you try to pull the lever out of gear. Even with the engine not running but turning over it will easily come out of gear.

It is off the Boat, and I just wanted to make sure before I repainted it and threw it on my boat that it is all good. With it off the boat, could I damage the drive by putting it into gear with lyres to test the functions.

Thanks again for the help Don.

Nope, won't hurt anything. Just turn the prop when trying to get it out of gear.
