Continuing in my efforts to disassemble and evaluate my new project. 1990 Volvo SP-A outdrive.

I am at the point of trying to remove the upper gear housing. It was pretty stuck - ended up using the front nuts as jamb nuts in order to push the gearbox up and off. It finally came, but I am not sure what is supposed to come off with it. In reference to Don S old post....

What is the shaft coupler that he mentions having to push back down? Here's a picture of where I am now. The shaft wants to come up with the gear box. Is it supposed to? It doesn't seem like I am able to lift the box up high enough to turn it and pull it out.

The shaft in your pic does come out with the upper. There is a coupler at the bottom of that shaft that connects the upper to the lower. It isnt fastened, it just slips over the shafts. If its still on the bottom of the upper shaft, just push it down. Once you get the upper turned on its side, the ujoint yoke should slide off the drive shaft. Sometimes the yoke rusts onto the driveshaft, hopefully yours is not one of the rusted ones.

Okay - got it off. And yes, was able to slide the coupler down. It turned out to be in a little bind, but it came off pretty easy.

Now the problem is as you describe. I have a comealong tied to a tree.... the cable is as tight as a drum! Any suggestions on getting the driveshaft off without breaking something? Hopefully also not entailing cutting the u-joints! That would not be a fun job

Sorry to hear you're rusted on. Being in the midwest, I haven't run into that problem personally. However, some Iboaters have cut the ujoints. Maybe do a search...
I wouldn't want to be at the other end of that come along when something gives and that 35# upper is flying through the air! Also, the drive shaft, bearings and seals are held in by some pretty big snap rings...I'm not sure what is going to give first, but nothing is going to give easy.

I can tell you're not going to pick away at this slowly, I hope it comes apart for you, and will be watching for updates.

While I have the time I am working at disassembling everything, pulling the engine, etc. I'm not going slowly... but I am not trying to rush and do anything TOO rash. (At least not yet). :D

I went ahead and put the gear box back on the outdrive for now. I will not have time to work on it for the next week or so. One thing I have considered doing is disassembling the gear box so I can pull the yoke out. Then I can pull the engine with the u-joints attached and attack it that way. Any reason that would not be possible?

While I've never tried that, or seen it done...it may work.

In this link, the 4 bolts, #16, are going to be your next area of difficulty. Don't be afraid to use some heat around the outside of the case to get those to loosen. I can recall removing mine and they where very tight, I would expect yours to be corroded in like everything else. Also keep track of any shims you run across, including the ones under the upper, they must go back in.

Your in uncharted waters here...good luck!!

That's the story of my life. Of course I have always taken "the road less traveled." ;)

By the way - the link you posted to the Volvo store. Anytime I have ever seen that link posted, which is quite often, there is never anything there. It says.... [h=1]We'll be back soon[/h]

The Volvo Penta Online Store is only accessible to visitors located in the United States**. Please contact your local dealer for information concerning Genuine Volvo Penta parts

I am in SW Florida, which feels like its own country from time to time... but is still part of the U.S. Is this a temporary thing, or perhaps a browser setting thing... or what? Does the link work for you?
