I'm installing an impeller rebuild kit. Anybody have any tips on removing cover? Manual says to use 2 screwdrivers and pry on 2 sides, but I can only pry from one. Can't get in to other side. LU dropped easy enough, but I'm trying not to break cover. Please help. Dan

Re: removing water pump cover on 66 merc 50hp

your asking about the lower half of the waterpump, not the top half?
i never understood how to pry on 2 sides of the bottom one either, could only do one. just kept working it back and forth till it moved enough that I could get under the other end. I was worried about damaging the base as i didn't find a replacement one, just the new upper. hopefully someone else has a better idea what the manual says.

I do mean the top half. Says to remove centrifugal slinger from top of pump--remove 3 nuts. I've freed the side with 2 studs, but the other will not come loose and there's no room to pry. Manual says I may have to chisel it off . Is a replacement seal, insert, and cover available? Thanks Diaric----Dan.

Nice to find someone with experience with the same motor I have!!

Re: removing water pump cover on 66 merc 50hp

Hi,
I had a little trouble with my 60hp too. I had a screwdriver with a bent tip (sort of curved an old screwdriver) and had to work it around but it came off. I just put in an impeller and didn't work and ended up replaceing the whole pump. There must have been a leak somewhere below the top half. I had a hard time getting the bottom half of too. Once it got past the O-ring it came right out. There is a tapered berring right below the pump. After I replaced the pump it peed like a russian race horse. Now I have the lower unit off again because someone lost a spring that goes at the top of the driveshaft. I didn't know it needed one till I got to looking at the blowup of the lower unit. It preloads the berring at the bottom. you better see if yours needs one too. It apparently fell out when someone pulled the lower unit and they never saw it hit the ground. Good luck...............Jerry

after i took the slinger and the nuts off, mine just came apart. I did have to chisel my impellor. once it moved a bit with the chisel it pried up as well, very tight though. thought you meant you were having trouble with the bottom one as thats where i had trouble so I could change the O-ring. this sierra kit has the top half that says fits our engine. Apparently the bottom half is different on the 66 and I haven't beeen able to locate

this chart shows the sierra part numbers for some of the pieces. I think it just doesn't list our motor properlly. the complete water pump kit, 18-3507 includes the upper, and fits ours. but its not listed seperate on the chart for the upper half alone. same with the lower half, but i understand it could be different. good luck

That's an idea--As far as the spring, are you refering to the pre-load pin? I didn't see one when I took down the unit. The manual explains about those and what to look for.

As far as top cover goes, the side with 1 stud seems to be frozen to the cover. I'll have to make something 'curved' and try it. Thanks, Dan

I can see where it would be easy to loose the spring as you slide the lower unit off you wouldn't see it fall and roll of the drive or where ever you are working. I don't think mine ever had one when I got it. I looked with a magnet and visual where I worked on it and found nothing. There was a pin on the end of the shaft but I just thought it was to pilot the shaft in to place. The spring holds the shaft down when in reverse. Mine was slipping out of reverse when I powered up. So I tore it down again and am waiting for the spring and a rubber seal. I guess some lower units didn't have the spring as they had a roller berring instead of a tapered berring. Good luck..............Jerry

As I stated earlier, the pump top cover seems to be frozen to a stud.[the side of pump with the single stud] Does anyone know if these studs are pressed in, or screwed in? I was thinking that I could try to turn the stud using the 2-nut method to free it, but I don't want to break it. Diaric--what do you think???????????? Dan

Re: removing water pump cover on 66 merc 50hp

the studs should be part of the lower half. the upper half should pull through the studs. when i pulled the bottom. i had the same problem, as it wouldn't come free.

I understand that, but do you know if that stud is pressed or screwed in under the bottom housing. If I can turn that stud a little it should break the grip that it has on the upper housing, and then the housing should come off--- Dan

Just checked gear housing assemble diagram-- Looks like it is screwed into gear housing---goes thru top and bottom of pump.

i THINK its pressed in if i remember rightly. try some penetrating oil or something that may dissolve calcium deposits around the stud. i know the last one i changed for a buddy was tougk cause sand was packed in all around it. if you had the top half i would just chisle or punch around the studs to loosen. good luck

The stud is screwed into the aluminum housing. You might put a socket or some tube over the stud and rap straight down on it and break it loose. Real easy. It is just coroded to the stud. I had a tough time getting mine out.

Also the spring I talked about at the top of the drive shaft, I thought it went around the pin but it is in the driveshaft under the pin. I just ordered one and a rubber seal. Oh well, I need the seal. Hope you get your pump off. ....................Jerry
