Removing Water Pump Impeller

I'm trying to break down my lower unit.

The impeller, which according to my manual should just slide up off the drive shaft, won't budge.

I've given it a little shot of WD-40, but still no dice. Any tips on how to get the impeller off the drive shaft (short of cutting it off and buying a new one!)

Thanks in advance!!

You need to buy a new one anyway....so smack it,pry it or whatever it takes without damaging the drive shaft or case..

Not arguing with you... I certainly have no knowledge base to stand on!

But, I'm just wondering... If I were able to get the impeller off the shaft in tact, why would it need to be replaced? It looks as if it is in fine shape.

Because they deteriate with age. Blades break off. The rubber comes unbonded from the metal hub. When it happens, it is too late, bye-bye engine. Impellers are cheaper than powerheads.

Look at the bright side, impeller kits aren't expensive, you already have the lower unit off and a new impeller will make for a worry free season next year!:D

A Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel works great for this. Cut most of the way through then split it with a cold chisel.

Silvertip has the best idea. You can shred the impeller, but dont damage the drive shaft, they're a lot harder to come by... And changing your impeller every other year is just considered good regular maintenance.
