removing yamaha 6 hp lower unit cap?

How do I remove the cap on the lower unit thats behind the prop on a 1986 yamaha 6 hp 2 stroke? Do I beat it or is there a special tool? I accidently pulled the shift linkage loose so i have to take the whole thing apart to put the shift linkage back.

best I recall the shaft and bearing carrier come out together.
I use an adapter on my slide hammer and the oxy acetylyne rig.
