I am new to boating so this may be a dumb question, but is it considered bad luck, to rename a boat?

The name of our boat (Dad N Lad) was given by a previous owner back in 1977. After I brought it to the river for the first time a few weeks ago for some testing and trials, I realized how old our boat really is. Its a 1974 Invader Intruder. So I was thinking of renaming the boat "Old School".

Would it be considered bad luck, to rename a boat? Not that I care about superstition, but is it uncooth to do rename a boat?

Some consider it bad luck, other's do not. It is your boat, do whatever you feel is best.

Personally, My boat means so much to me and my Dad would have been so proud that I am in a position to enjoy it that there was no way I would not rename my boat.
I named it after him and nothing would have stopped me making it more special by doing so.
(Made my Mum cry too);)

Go with you heart.
Make it special.

I would not hesitate to rename a boat. There are alot of great old boats out there with not-so-great names

An example I like to bring up whenever this question is asked;

Ever hear of the Duc de Duras or the Horst Wessel?

Both ended up doing pretty well when renamed to Bonhomme Richard and USCG Eagle.

If you do decide to rename your boat, don't forget the crystals and feathers.

Well its a 50-50 shot then cause the Bonhomme Richard is on the ocean floor, and the USCG Eagle is still in service lol!!!

That it is but you have to remember that the captain was able to trade it in on a slightly damaged brand new English 44 gun model :)

Any boat I own will have a name conferred by me. That is a large part of making her mine.

I also name my machines and vehicles.

In the old days, skippers would change the name if the boat was a "hard luck" vessel. Sometimes it helped. You make your own luck now.
