I was looking for a parts boat , and I came across an aluminum 1968 Starcraft 16' (it has what appears to be windshied in good condition and top for my boat) w/ a Renault (90 hp?) engine and a merc outdrive, O says there's water in the oil (cracked block most likely). Boat appears restorable ecept maybe the engine, what's w/ the Renault? How hard is it to find an engine, or did they make an alternative engine thats more available than the Renault for that out drive, that a person could find and match up to the merc outdrive?? or if i can buy it cheap enough scrap the boat and part the outdrive

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Renault engine in a 1968 Starcraft??

I had 2 Seaswirls in the early 80s with renault motors they were a piece of junk. Head gaskets galore and warped heads. Those 90s put out about as smuch as a 35 ob on a good day. I can not remenber how many times I had to get home on a 6hp kicker. Did not have any extra cash then so had to keep the things running.I doubt you can even find parts for them anymore.

thanks ,

Sounds like an offer on the windshield and top only...I sure could use that windshield for my 66' Nassau, top would be a major score, the white top would look real cool on the black boat....

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: RENAULT?????!!!!!

totally aside from fact that motor is crap, both motor and OD are obsolete and impossible to find parts for.

1. buy boat for cheeeeap
2. throw away motor and sell drive on fleebay
3. close up transom hole and bolt on nice 50-70hp outboard
4. happy boating
