Hi,

I am on the way to replace the carpeting in my aluminium fish boat, it is 10 years old. I already removed the front deck and strip the carpet on it, the plywood board is still in good shape but since I am in the processing should I put a coat of any wood preservative or not on the plywood ?

Also what you guys use to seal between the deck and the livewell, originally it was some kind of plumber putty, should I use the same stuff or use some kind of silicone sealer instead ?

Thanks

Smoky

Smokey - A wood preservative or any other protective coating for that matter ain't gonna hurt - How did you manage to get 10 years out of what is there? Like you don't really need any suggestions from here.

Re: Renewing carpets

Soak the plywood really well with a wood preservative or sealer. I've used several coats on some plywood in my boat and it really does the job. For soft areas use a wood rot restorer, very expensive for large areas but it turns soft wood rock-hard. Eight ounces is about $8 and it evaporates so fast you need to plan your work... but it is effective for spots that can't be replaced easily.

Also, marine carpet is now sold in the Home Depot and Lowe's store near me for about $6 per yard. Same stuff in my friend's new Crownline except it's not edged and grommeted.
