If someone knows of a thread where this is answered feel free to post a link.

Anyways, its a simple question. I own a fiberglass boat with faded, dull looking paint. I'd like to repaint to showroom quality. Can I just paint over it or do I need to strip off all the old paint? What sorts of paints would I need (gelcoats/primers/marine paint/etc etc). Anybody have some input?

Well, you have many choices of paints. The key is what are you painting over? I thought you said old paint so if you are painting over old paint then as long as the old paint is holding well then you can paint over it. The other thing to watch out for is paint compatibility. Do you know what kind of paint is on there now? That will, unfortunately, make a difference on what your new paint will be. Single part urethanes will go over most old paints without a problem. Two-part polyurethanes should only be used over old two part or catalyzed paints.

Two-part paint systems are much harder and last longer than single part paints. Single part paints are easier to apply and are a little less expensive. A lot of folks here have used Pettit Easypoxy (one-part) paints with success. Although I think durability has been a problem. I am going to use Interlux Perfection which is a DIY two-part paint system that gives a much harder finish and better shine. There is no right or wrong just personal preference. Which ever brand you go with follow their instructions to the letter regardiing the prep and priming. Use their solvents and primers as well.

Re: Repainting Fiberglass

This is the boat. 21 years old, 16ft Quantum. By the way, the Force is no longer with me;)

As for old paint I have no idea. The paint is all still straight from the factory, I don't belive its been touched up at all. Theres lots of scratches in the paint and nicks. The picture doesn't do it justice but the red and black stripe below the red are very faded. I'm not sure if repainting is my best option, or if there are other options, but I'd like to make it look like it rolled off the showroom floor yesterday.

I was even thinking of adding some of that metallic flake to the red and black stripes, but I don't even know if thats possible.

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful. Hopefully I gave you enough information you can point me a little closer to the right direction.

Your boat is not painted but rather still has the original factory gel coat. If there are not too many scratches I would try wet sanding with 2000 grit follwed by compound, polish and wax. It should bring back the original colors and shine. If not then making it look identical to factory will be difficult especially with metal flake look. Can be done but you might need to take it to professional.
