Hi folks,
could you give me some tips as to if there is a quality gloss black type paint that I can refinish my Mercruiser outdrive? The previous owner brushed on some type of thick crappy looking flat black paint and the outdrive looks absolutely terrible. The flat black paint almost looks like bottom paint, and is EXTREMLY difficult to remove. Thanks

As far as final paint goes, any high quality polyurethane like Duponts Imron will work fine. I used awlgrip on mine and very shinny! Just be sure to use an epoxy primer to any bare metal. Sure Hope I never need to strip mine down to metal though. Tough stuff!

That is probably bottom paint (anti fouling paint) to keep the barnicals off in salt water, very common. That has to come off before you paint it with any type gloss paint.

I also use the Rustoleum as suggested by Bondo and others, works great.

Thanks for your input guys.

I am having a HECK of a time getting this paint off, it's so "rubbery" in texture. It clogs sandpaper up quickly, and even laquer thinner only is somewhat sucessfull at removing this paint. Next step is I am going to try some ZEP paint stripper from my work. The ZEP is STRONG stuff, and hopefully speed up this task!

I use some stuff called Aircraft paint remover...spray it on and pressure wash it off...About 3 times and you have bare metal.
Be sure to cover the transom or anything else it could get on.
Lightly sand with 600 grit.Wipe down with Acetone.
A light coat of Zinc Chromate primer then paint away.

I kept having problems with the paint peeling off the lower and this cured it.

Wal-Mart sells a product made by Sta-kleen (I think). It's far thicker than aircraft and works much better, especially on rubbery paints and glues. It's a paint and varnish remover. I've had far better experiences with this than aircraft, and it's cheaper too!

The reason "thinner" doesn't work very well in this application is that it's doing just that - thinning or diluting the material. An emulsifier, such as a "remover" will actually dissolve the material or cause dissassociation of the chemical compounds. For small areas, brake parts cleaner works well since it does break down the material - which is another reason not to get it on painted surfaces!
