I want to repaint my Picton Sprint speedboat, using Penguard HB primer. It says that it cannot be applied over single pack type paints.

Can I safely use a paint stripper to remove the existing paintwork from the hull to expose the grp or is sanding the only way to go?

I would only sand personally, somebody with more experience might have tried using strippers before, but I don't think it's healthy for the resin at all.

What is the hull material? Wood or fiberglass?

You have a number of options.

Paint stripper which is messy and tends to penetrate wood.

Soda blasting does a nice job if it is available.

Consider other types of paint? Some may work and I would even do a test area.

as long as it's a stripper made for fiberglass they work great.
