Repair a stator

Hi, all. I'm fixing my boat on a budget, and was wondering if anyone has ever repaired a stator. It is for a Mercury thunderbolt 115 hp 1972 model. The stator itself is god. Ie there is the correct amount of resistance when put on a tester, but the leads were corroded off right at the stator. I'm going to try to repair it today, but was checking to see if anyone has any useful suggestions.

Leave enough wire to re repair it if it fails later on. Cut as much of the worst part of the wire off as needed to give you a good solid wire after soldering it together. You can solder wire to wire or use the crimp connectors with heat shrink over them. You must seal the repair from the environment esspecially if your going to use it in salt water. You can get used stators off ebay or used boatyards for a decent price. Heres a thread with some salvage yards on them posted by another member http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/salvage-yards-wilde1-438822.html Used 115 stators on ebay here --->>> http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=Mercury+115+stator&_sacat=0&_from=R40 Be sure if you buy from here you get the proper stator for your engine.

I did this exact thing to my 1973 Merc115, and is working fine, been 3 yrs now. Had to pull flywheel to get to good wire.

The stator can be removed by first removing the 8 5/16" bolts that ring the flywheel nut. Set the motor to TDC first to make reassembly easier.
