Hi to everyone. I am in the process of restoring 1981 Astroglass 17ft. I have removed top cap and have the hull "flipped". After flipping hull, I found PO had "tried" to fiberglass in some areas. I need to know how rework what is there, where to add new glass, or just in general what i need to do to get ready for paint. The boat was orignally a silver and blue metal flake. Looks like a descent job (don't know how many years ago), but paint is flaking in some areas. Please note the exposed parts on keel. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Well if it was mine... I would take an 8 inch "mud hog" with 36 grit paper and feather it back to remove all the last guys "repair" and then add a layer of CSM with poly resin to cover the "center" area then a little larger patch. followed by a third, again a little larger. Block sand these to just below level. Follow with fairing compound (poly resin mixed with cabosil to the consistency of heavy oatmeal. sand and finish to your best ability. As for painting that is a whole other subject.

I don't see any serious issues myself other then the final finish. Obviously you will remove a lot of original finish in the repair efforts but that is to be expected. And you will never ever rematch the metal flake finish ever. That was all laid out in the mold during the initial built of the hull. So you have a few choices of how you want to finish that hull now. Either Gel Coat, or paint are the two most used on these forums. I suggest you read a few boating projects on these forums and get an idea which one you want to proceed with. JMHO!
