0514111453.jpg0514111452.jpgin the middle of switching out motors. figured with motors are out switch out the gimble bearing. i have read through the manual (both seloc and mercruiser) and they both bascally say that it pulls out with a (in a poor mans shop) slide hammer. well i have one main question before we get carried away with pulling and putting a bunch of force on this i want to know what this piece is and does it need to come out before we pull on the bearing...in the atttached pictures we are looking from where the outdrive is attched looking in the bellow, you will see the end of a screwdriver pointing to a piece and that is the piece in question. dad says that is looks like a "spanner nut" or "looks like the piece in an automatic transmission that hold the bands in place"......we just dont want to break something that dont need to be broken. thanks in advance

There is no spanner nut. Your screwdriver is on the housing. put the puller jaws from the slide hammer through the inside diameter of the bearing.

You could also check out the must have technical information for DIY'ers section in this forum . There are 2 section in there showing you how to build a puller tool. One uses threaded rod ,washers, nuts and a piece of steel.

Ayuh,.... Being that New, the bearing is held Just by resistance....

The really old pre-Alphas sometimes had a Snap-ring that they quit using...

Re: repair in progress...replacing gimble bearing...

ok i have fought with this thing and fought with it to the point where i called and priced what it was going to cost to pull and put new gimble back in. i was informed that on the high end would run about $275. i have tried a slide hammer and the jaws would just pop out (bellow hole to small to get things set right as we could not get hand and tool both in there). tried the puller using all thread and all that happened there was we bent the washers and hole tool came out but bearings staied in place.

now the new attempt today (abot to go out abnd try this) dad made me a "plug" that "should" fit in the bearing. the plug was cut out of a piece of 1" solid rod that is parrered in then threaded to fit 1/2" corse thread. and will thread on to both the slide hammer that i have and the all thread to go back to that style puller.

lets all hope this works............will send up date as soon as i know more..........if any one has any idea please send them ......many thanks in advance......again this is a 87 or 88 alpha1 with a 140 horse
