I am looking to purchase a repair manual and was wondering what the difference between a repair and service manual is. I am fairly mechanically inclined but have never worked on outboards before. I am trying to replace the water pump on an old 40 horse Lark lll.

Re: Repair manual?

model # of the motor will point you to the correct manual. the aftermarket manuals are incomplete, and cover many motors.

Re: Repair manual?

this is the correct manual, that motor is fairly simple to do. remove the 1"x2" plate on the side of the leg, take out the bottom screw, pay attention it has to go back together just like that. remove the bolts on the i think 7 bolt on the foot, the unit should drop right out. 3 or 4 screws on the water pump housing, do not loose the key to the impeller, soapy water on the impeller makes it easier to put back together, o ring goes on top of drive shaft in groove. make sure water tube line up, and bolt back up.

BTW, the screw you are removing behind the 1x2" plates is the linkage that connects the shifter together.
