Living here in the midwest, I'm always amazed when I see photo's of these engines. Some look like they would be a real challenge to get apart. I would be interested to know how you salt water mechanic's deal with that on a daily basis. What do you do with all of those storm damaged engine's? A flat rate manual can't be much of a guide for you guy's.

Lots of heat (and patience) is often used on stubborn fasteners. Most submerged engines are junk, unless gotten to immediately after they see air. If you can get a motor running in less than an hour, you have a chance to save it if you run it long enough to get rid of all water and salt.

Sometimes it takes a little help from the heat wrench and also a little luck to get things apart.

Here in the midwest, we see engines from the mid 50's that still run, and look good. How old do they get in your salt water location's? I know a broken stainless steel bolt in an aluminum casting can turn into a mean, time consuming job. Here! any water pump can be done in one, to one, and a half hours. That can't be the case in salt water. I would like to visit one of your shops just to see how some of those job's are handled.

I stress preventive maintenance to all my customers. Every time I service a waterpump, I put all the bolts back with a little grease. Flushing the motor, rinsing salt off with fresh water and the use of anti-corrosion spray are a big help.

Salt water is a big problem for outboard engines and i/o's You must make sure to flush your engine with fresh water, and spray it down with a can of WD-40.
