One of the trimcylinders on my Volvo Penta 290DP-A is leaking and I want to repair it with new seals. According to Volvo Penta it cannot be repaired and I have to buy a new set. Is that correct?
The Z-drive is from 1989 and with the round type of cylinders with a round inside nut with 4 pinholes at the end where the pushrod comes out. At the end of the pushrod i mounted a joint for connection tho the driveframe. ie it is not the older type with square ends - that type can be repaired. Hope that someone has experience in solution af this problem.

None of the VP trim cylinders are rebuildable.
What is the engine number you have? There is an AQ290A engine, but it never had a DP, there is also a DP-A drive which is a DP, but the 290 is not part of its name. Looking up parts for them is done by engine model.

Re: Repair of trimcylinder on VP 290 from 1989

Hey Don
The engine is a AQ 205A with a 290 DP-A drive.
According to my Selco repair manual is the old type with a straight pushrod and with a hole in the end rebuildable, but I cannot find anything about the newer types.
May be I cannot get the gaskets/o-rings form Volvo but need to get them from fx. a cylinderservice company. I think that the main problem will be to get the connectionjoint of
the pushrod as I think it is crimped on. But is this the problem when you say that they cannot be repaired ?

Regards

Jens Juhl

You should have cylinders as shown in the picture below. There are no repair kits from Volvo for repairing them. I think the best thing to do would be to take the cylinder to the repair place and have them look at it.
