I have a 1989 Skeeter with a 1992 Merc 75hp that needs repair. I took the outfit to a local repair shop and the motor is blown. $4500.00 to repair. Question. Would you repair or look for a new (used) boat? When I say money is no object, I mean that I can afford to buy another boat with cash.
I bought this outfit from my ex-father-in-law (no hard feelings) about 8 years ago. It's only a 15 foot boat but served me pretty well.
Thanks for your ideas and input.

It kind of depends:

If you like the boat, and don't necessarily want a newer, or bigger/different boat, then you can get the motor repaired. Or you can buy a new motor for it, since the repair is fairly pricey.

If you think you might want a larger or newer or different boat, then the choice is easy!

I would just buy a new/used boat.
Can pick up nice ones all day long for $4000.

Wouldn't rebuild that engine for that price.

If you like the boat, trailer, setup, and it fits your needs, why not hang a new or newer motor on the boat?

I would part out and sell the old one on ebay.

Any idea what caused the motor failure?

The wife took the call on the repair cost so I don't know exactly what's wrong. I think a blown cylinder. I'm going to pick up the boat on Monday and will know more then. I'm leaning real hard for a new or used boat as opposed to putting $4500.00 into a repair.

Well I went ahead and traded in on a used 1997 Stratos 18 feet with a 115 Johnson. Much bigger boat than I had and only cost $1500 over what the repair would have been. I'm happy with the deal.

well, you know the history of your current boat and if you like it and it is in good shape maybe a repower is the best. why buy someone else's problem...and be back in the same "boat" in a couple of years. couldn't resist the pun
