How much should it cost to repair a stainless prop? How do they fix it, just pound it out? The damage is a bend about the size of a dime and about 1/8th out of alignment.

They pound it straight, add metal where needed, grind and polish, and balance. Real difficult material to work with. Usually 2 - 3 times the charge for rebuilding an aluminum one.

Thanks WillyB. I had one lined up to buy as a spare at a good price but after paying to get the ding out its no bargain! You saved me from making a bad investment.

I'm always amazed at the work a competent prop shop can do (like H&H in Maine). Yes it's expensive but the prop comes out essentially new. Almost hard to think of it as a "repair".

I know what you mean. I picked up a cheap prop on E-Bay a couple of months ago and just dropped it off at Bay Propeller in Chesapeake, Virginia and came back and picked it up last month when I was down that way again. They rehubbed it, indexed it (made all 3 blades the same pitch), took the dings out of the tips, bent just a tad more cup into the blades, balanced it, and polished it. Gave me back what looked, and was, better than a brand new prop for less than half what a new one would cost. The cost on it was a hundred bucks on the nose. Its just amazing what they can do with those props.

Thom
