Hey all just thought I'd post a few pics of some work I've been doing on the boat. Just for reference, I haven't done any of the fiberglass work in these pics, and I know it's bad. But I don't have the time or money right now (college student) to rip the floor out and do it right. I am just going to fix the really bad areas and throw down some outdoor carpet on the floor, the rest will be painted with rustoleum marine topside paint. I painted a small seat pedistal and started on the console, still have a few more coats to do. BTW, anyone that has experience using the roll and tip method, I would appreciate your advice.

Here are a few pics of how the boat looks with everything ripped out.

Yeah oops there are a few spots like that but its solid, thats why im going to put down carpet, so most of it won't even be seen.

To TD, im not sure what you are saying about the pics, on my computer they are big but you don't have to scroll side to side to see them.

Re: Repair update

they look ok on my puter.....

but that doesnt mean they are good on every one elses.

when you go to photo bucket....choose the edit photo button....then click resize.......then resize to 640 x 480 somthing or other......its a standard size for message boards. you have to do that with each pic you post, and have posted.

what i did was to set the default upload size.....that way they would all be the correct size every time.

Re: Repair update

Was looking into marine tex. What is the stuff that everyone on here uses? White or Gray? Is it easy to apply and work (sand)? Thanks in advance.

Re: Repair update

Gel coat is muy dinero though. Marine tex seems a little cheaper. Plus I need to fill small holes, and I wasn't aware gel coat was capable of that.

Re: Repair update

gell coat will do the smallest to the biggest.....

everyone in the states seems to be having a hard time finding gellcoat

for 12 bucks we can get a small can of gellcoat...(the size of a "plastic wood" can) from a place called industrial plastics and paint.

a little mekp.....and aceitone and you have repairs for the next year for under 25 bux.

the repairs with gellcoat are carried out the same way as a standard repair.....

if you want step by step instructions.......just ask :)

cheers

Re: Repair update

Ok I know I posted a thread a while back asking about gel coat but I'm still a little confused about it. So gel coat is basically a pigmented resin that I could use to fill gouges and holes right? Could I then sand and paint over it? Here are a few examples of what I'm needing to repair. Pics are a little blurry but you get the idea.

Re: Repair update

There are differences between Marine Tex (epoxy) and gel coat (polyester).

Yes, basically gel coat is pigmented polyester resin.

For repairs on fiberglass like you've pictured either product will work, gel coat should cost less and be a little easier to sand and get the surface smooth again. Epoxy is tougher, so when sanding it tends to leave a high spot as the surrounding gel coat is removed at a faster rate than the epoxy patch. If you plan to use it on other surfaces like wood, metal or other types of plastic, then epoxy is a far better choice, gel coat won't stick nearly as well to them. If you're filling screw holes that will be redrilled and used again, then epoxy is the best choice also.
