Considering a project with the crack on the top of the transom pictured below. Is this something that can be repaired fairly reasonably, I think I'm gonna have to do the transom anyway. The boat is a 1976 Seasquirt made by seastrike if that means anything. Thanks for the input.

if you are doing the transom any how....that crack wont be there when you put the new one in......but ...now you know.....that a new transom does need to be installed in the boat.

95% of the time if you see a crack around a transom, it is because of internal weakness. If water was allowed into a wood transom it is done for after a time.

Yeah like I said I was kinda planning on having to do the transom anyway along with the floor too :D. Hopefully I'll get a resto thread goin here soon since I'm going to pick it up this weekend.

What I've done, is if the transom seems strong enough for some use, then I just clean it off and lay some good silicone over it with my finger to shape it. 3M 5200 is the best stuff. The water is in there already and you can't get it out, not much else to do.

Did you even look at the picture????? That suggestion is not safe in this particular case. If the transom is flexing enough to crack not only the gel coat, but the fiberglass under it then thhe transom is shot and continued use is ill advised.

That might work for a while, but I think once I'm in the fiberglassing mood I might as well do the transom ;).

Re: Repairable????

The crack is above the transom hold downs, that damage can happen when trailering the boat, but the transom is shot or it wouldn't happen.

You'll find the stringers are toast too.
Definately fixable but the price should say "project boat".

Yeah the price definitely reflects the condition, and this particular boat doesn't have stringers it uses foam core construction (I think that's the right term!). Thanks for the advice :).
