Repairing Deck/Livewell Hatch

As you can see in the pictures the opening ring hole is to large. Also the primary problem is when you step on the hatch it gives a little. The supports are cracked on the back side. Can this be fixed by an amature? Was the back side of this painted with some sort of white marine paint?

i would take some aluminum angle and thru bolt it to stiffen the lid, along side of the ones there.

Thanks TD, problem is that area gets alot of foot traffic and I don't think bolt heads sticking up right there would work. I can just hear my wife right after she stubs her toe on one.
Do you think there would be a way to stiffen it up with fiberglass or something else from underneath?

You can pick up some fiberglass supplies and fix it pretty easily. You need to grind down any area you want to repair so you'll get a good bond and build up the ends of the supports so the glass doesn't break there again. You can add extra glass and possibly more braces like the ones already there if needed.

If its a nice boat..

I'd remove the hatch and grind all the wood off the back, plus the white gel or paint, then glass new wood back. For a small job I'd use epoxy unless poly was handy, "here polly polly..."
