I have been working on a 1969 Johnson 20 hp, got it started yesterday after some effort.

It wouldn't start unless choked and full throttle.
anything less and it hiccups, but wont start. It sounded really good once it started though.

It has a rebuilt/resealed lower unit, new water pump, new fuel pump, and rebuilt carb.

I ordered new points and condensers/breakers today. The coils are my debate. They were covered in Brown globby stuff, as are the points, and pretty much everything under the flywheel. I cleaned most of the stuff up. but $20 for new points, I figured why not.

The wiring for the coils are still pretty soft, and I cannot see any visible cracks, but mind you, they were covered in goop. Think I should replace them for peace of mind? or are they fine?

Re: Replace coils?

peace of mind is a pretty good reason.
Got manual? you can test 'em with an ohmmeter, if you know the specs.

Re: Replace coils?

They look pretty good from here, but may be on their way out if the plastic is starting to degrade. On the other hand, I've seen tons of bad coils, but never so much goopy stuff that it covered everything else inder the flywheel. I think you need to evaluate and identify just what kind of goop you found in there.

See those ground wires on the coils? You need to loosen the screw and rotate the wire terminal so that it pulls the loop out of the wire, then retighten the screw. Push the wire back toward the coil too. The wires are dangerously close to dragging on the flywheel, which will wear them in two.

They don't look cracked, they look rather new. Start with the P and C's and go from there.

Age. One or both of them have been replaced at some time.

I ask because my 70 has 2 brown looking coils, I'm hoping the brown is the newer of the two! :D
