Replace entire throttle control?

1982 Mercruiser 120, with original no name throttle box/control. Neutral safety switch was acting up so i decided to just replace the whole thing.

I got the Uflex B184M made specifically for mercruiser cables. It caomes with a neutral safety switch, and trim switch. '

How hard are these to change out. Seems like it would be pretty straight forward. The one thing i need to know is how to tell the difference between throttle and shift cables. Anything else that could pop up?

Just put motor in neutral and throttle closed. The do the same with controls and adjust to the cables. The shift cable will be in mid position and the throttle cable will be at the end of its through. Be sure to look at you safety switch. It should be depressed so starter will work.

I understand how a throttle cable works, however, since they arent color coated, and i am not replacing the cables, and i cant "follow" or trace the cables back to the throttle box, i was wondering if the throttle cable had a different end or position in the box then the shift cable. Or if there was any other way to differentiate the two.

Nope. They're exactly the same. When you take the old box off just grab one of the cables and start moving it while you're looking at the engine. If you've got the throttle cable, the carb will be moving, if you have the shift cable the shift plate will be moving....

Well that was easy, took about 30 minutes. Throttle cable was labelled but i have another question:

The wires hooked up to the neutral safety switch were both blue. Now, im thinking that it doesnt matter which one goes where.... that neutral just completes the circuit, and allows it to start.... is this the case?
