Replace impeller or whole pump?

I have read in several posts that it is a good idea to replace the impeller every few years. I just bought a motor that has a very shady maintainance record. I have also noticed that my motor only sprays out a little water, and would like to replace the impeller, so I have two questions?

1. How difficult is it to replace an impeller?

2. Is it better or easier to replace just the impeller itself or just install a whole new water pump (OMC part# 379775, I think...) since I will have it apart anyway, and there is only a small price difference.

My motor is a 1959 Johnson 35HP Model RDS21 Serial # 1917414.

Thanks...Boatin'B

boatin'B,Replacing the waterpump is a fairly straight forward process made simpler with the use of a service manual.I would reommend changing the entire assembly verses just the impeller.

Re: Replace impeller or whole pump?

Thanks for the quick reply ob, will the clymer manual for my motor suffice? I ordered one a few days ago, and it should be here any day.

Yup,The Clymer manual should be just fine to walk you through the steps of your waterpump replacement. If you have any questions through the procedure be sure and post back.Good luck.
