replace impeller

I replaced the impeller and put the lower unit back on with considerate resistance. Now when I go from neutral to reverse or forward there is some clanking until it is seated then smooth. Is this going to ruin my gears or is some of this ok? I am a first year boat owner. The motor is a 1985 mercruiser 170 h.p.. Any help or words of wisdom how to fix this is appreciated.

"considerate resistance " is not the way it goes back together.Sounds to me like you should take it apart and have a closer look.Charlie

Re: replace impeller

When I say considerate resistance I mean it wouldn't go in then I spun the prop and I could feel it move into place. I'm going to play with it tomorrow and shift it quicker, I was shifting it pretty slow today so maybe i was hearing it when it was in nomans land (I hope). Otherwise what should I look at.

Re: replace impeller

You Shouldn't be Able to "I spun the prop",.... If it was in Forward,.. Like it's Supposed to be,..........<br />I like to use a bungee cord to Lock the drive In Forward,............ There's No Way I can hold pressure on the shaft,+ Mount the Drive.........

Re: replace impeller

That was my concern that maybe it wasnt in forward even though I had the shifter in forward and couldn't spin the prop counterclockwise from the back. Could I reseat it by running in forward and shut down the motor and take it off and put it back on again. Would it do any good?

You said "until it is seated then smooth". You could be just shifting toooo slow, you are hearing the grinding more pronounced. And sometimes you are tensed after doing something the first time and then doubt yourself, you hear things you did not hear before.
