replace lower unit?

With the lower unit out of the motor.If I can clamp the shift shaft and manually move it from F -N-R and it lock in place all 3 ways would you say that my lower unit is ok or the shift dog is bent because with it up in place it will not go into reverse.Was told by one person its fine and another the shift fork as he calls it which is fine I know what he's talking about willl not engege reverse.

Mitch, Gearcases have shift dogs, not forks like a motorcycle or auto.

As Bondo says, what is it?

Most Mercs only will "lock" into neutral. In forward and reverse the shift shaft will turn a bit in either direction.

It being a 1968 the cam and pin are likely worn due to the first problem you had....

Finally had time to tear lower unit down today seeing hoildays are coming and its raining all weekends in NC.How do you know how much waer a cam pin will have before they will not work the only thing I got left to pull out is the shift shaft not sure how to get it out to take a closer look at Cam pin is spring loaded and seems to have alot of tention on it gears look good and so do the bearings.gears lower unit 001.jpggears lower unit 002.jpggears lower unit 003.jpg
