I have just purchased a 1980 Sea Ray 210 CC. The engine and outdrive are missing. I was told it had a 454 but, according to Sea Ray's specs, they didn't come with that engine, and only went up to an 898, which I believe is a 305 (boat anchor). Can I replace the 898 with a 260 unit, without a huge amount of modifications?? I have not seen the outdrive unit itself as it's in the old owners garage/shop/whatever so, I can't say with certainty what the old outdrive is. He told me it is missing the lower unit but the rest of it I can have. Whaddya think?

Yeah, I know about the rot thing, and am replacing the aft deck floor and whatever else needs to go.

If your boat had an 898 in it (a SBC) then putting another Small Block wont be any issue at all. What you need to make sure of is that the drive and transom assembly are compatable. If you are going to buy used, be sure you have a compatable package.

I'd have to say that the 898 is a great package. There's a reason they were used so extensively, besides the cost. Sure, it doesn't make the power of the 350, but they are out there in abundance. It takes very little to marinize an automotive short block, especially if you already have the marine accessories (water pump, manifolds, etc.). Brass expansion plugs and good quality head gaskets would be it. Add a four barrel and intake (marine of course), center riser exhaust, and a good rv cam and you will produce very close to 250HP without too much trouble. I see these parts on Ebay and CL almost every time I look. If the outdrive and transom assembly match up with a SBC, you are in good shape, my friend. Be sure to check the stringers where the front motor mounts are, too. Any rot there will allow the mounts to shift, and will toast your coupler in short order.

Once again, you guys RULE! I will check it out very carefully as far as compatible drive parts go. 250 hp is plenty for me. I am pulling the floor and replacing it, anyway so, I'm already planning on replacing the stringers if they look funky at all. Same rule for the transom. I'd rather be on the side of safety overkill than be statistical crab bait. New foam is going in, too. Thanks again, - I'll be back... J.P. :D
