I'm thinking about purchasing this 1990 Tracker with a 110 Evinrude outboard and its at a very good price because the owner says that the engine needs to be rebuilt. Would it be worth purchasing that boat and getting it rebuilt? or buy it just for the boat and replace the engine? Whats the average cost for that engine to be rebuilt? I'm on a budget, please help and let me know whats the most effecient way of doing it.....

it really all depends on what wrong with the motor. some only need a headgasket, some need complete rebuild. you can buy a good used motor probably for less than $1500-2000.

also if I did just buy a used outboard, would it have to be the same brand and year of motor to fit? and whats the average price to have a motor installed? whats the average price for a head gasket to be replaced if that were the case?

It's a buyers market for boats now because of gas prices and it going to get better later in the year. Unless your comfortable with doing the work yourself you might not get it on the water till late fall anyway. Look around for used motor prices and other comparable running boats. Also ask the seller exactly what is wrong with the motor and how he knows.

Controls in a boat can be replaced to match what brand engine you buy. With market conditions right now it may be more cost effective to replace the engine than rebuild it. ONE thing to keep in mind when deciding to rebuild, you know what you have when you are done and when done right the engine is as good as new. A used engine may have problems that the owner is selling.

It would be more convenient if you shopped for a J/E to fit the controls you currently have as this would save $$ on rigging costs. the engine would not have to be the same year. The red plug engines have been used for years and if it is the new MWS wiring there are adapter kits available if the replacement is non MWS.
