Re: replace shift shaft seal

Manual says to thread a 5/16 inch lag screw into the shift rod seal. Insert a 1/4 inch diameter rod from the other end and press the seal and screw from the gearcase. Models A - D only pertain to force

Re: replace shift shaft seal

Thanks alot eurolarva. I didn't want to do a tear down so I took a O-ring pick and poked a hole into the metal part of the seal and put a little screw into it and took a pair of vice scripts with a slide hammer and popped the seal out without a problem. now on to my next issue :D what is the gap setting for the points and what do I need to do to set the timing? thanks

Re: replace shift shaft seal

Points are 20 thousands of an inch. Timing should be pretty static and not need adjustment. If so 28 BTDC is the spec. How to find that is beyond me. Hopefully someone else here can help with that. I remember reading a merc thread that stated that because of the use of unleaded fuel that timing should be set at 31 degrees instead of 28. Good luck.
