I have a clymer OMC Stern Drive Shop Manual but it does not say how to replace the transom seal on my 1976 OMC 165 made by GM straight 6. It is in a 1977 Crestliner Norseman II. How do you replace the seal?

I typically do 300% more work than necessary then find there was a simple way to accomplish what took me two weeks to do.

Take off the screws all around the drive in the rubber on the transom. Lift the drive all the way up take the bottom screws off the bottom half of the boot.

Pull the rubber boot off the transom.See how the metal ring sits in the boot.

Take off the big clamp off the intermediate. All you need is a screwdriver.

Order the new boot 16 hole i think. This site might have it, or ebasic power has it, get the right one bye counting the holes in the old boot.

You do not need to remove the drive. Slip on the new one with the drive up.

Scrape off all the old stuff and put new marine silacone. There your done in a hour.

Good luck!

Take note if the screws below the water line come out easier than the ones above; on my '84 stringer it was indicative of rotten transom plywood behind the fibreglass. Over time, the seal screws leaked.

chiefalen nailed it in his first post. When I did mine, I used a little soap on the new boot to help get it over the drive and onto the intermediate housing groove. Slid right on no problem. I used marine sikaflex to seal mine as that's what I had on hand. A little dab in each screw hole and a good bead around the transom and you'll be good to go. Make sure that hoseclamp is tight before you seal it to the transom, as it's a biatch to reach after! :D

Use 3M 4200 crammed into the screw holes, not silicone. It would also be good to put a thin bead on the boot seal surface. This, of course, assumes that there is no transom rot.

I recently had mine off to pull the engine. I was amazed that no 'goop' had been used on the initial installation (over 30 years). Point being, a small amount of caution will go a long way.

Thanks everyone. I wonder why that was not covered in the manual.

This boat is solid aluminum so there won't be any transom rot. I know the hull is aluminum. I hope the transome is too.
