Any body know how involved it would be and how much it would cost me to replace two V-6 mercruisers in a 1991 30 foot Carver. I'm looking at buying the boat. The guy who winterized it last year didn't pump any antifreeze thru the blocks and the motors are toast. all four manifolds are shot and the blocks are cracked in multiple places. How long should it take me to pull the old motors and install the new ones ? The rest of the boat is in great condition, apparently the rest of the boat was winterized.

It will depend if you go rebuilt or new.I would think if you start at $8000,that would be conservative. You cant use too much from the old motors if you are looking to do block change.Charlie

Some times you can get a deal on small v8s for about the same as the v6.The motors are very similar.Charlie

Go to basicpower.com you can go long block -
rebuilt - new or rebuilt complete - manifolds -
many options. This would be a good starting
point.
Is your intake manifold good ?

With a new base engine.
Your - carb - fuel pump - starter - alternator -
circulating water pump - damper - pullys -
flywheel - coupler - intake - should be useable.

If you go up to a V-8, you may get into a can
of worms, making it fit?

How much time ? How handy are you ?

Elpaso 2nd reply -
You asked how big a job - how much time ?

Every boat - every engine set up is different.
Is boat in or out of water ?

What equipment do you have - hoists - fork lift -
crane - air compressor - engine stand - basis
shop tools ?

These engines with manifolds will weigh 400 lbs.
each.

You will need a helper - what are your mechinical
abilities ?
Have you ever pulled an engine or outdrive ?

Time estimate - 3 days - to - 3 weeks.

Re: replace twin V-6 mercruisers

Thanks to all for their input. It looked like a project i could finish in a few weeks at most, as i wanted to to a few minor things to the interior before it hit the water. Then comes the unexpected personal expense and there went that idea. Would've been a nice boat.
Thanks for all the help and i didn't want to leave anybody hangin.
